How this is calculated

The calculator follows your money month by month.

  1. Monthly rate. The annual rate r is compounded n times a year (4 = quarterly, 12 = monthly). It is converted to the equivalent monthly rate i = (1 + r/n)^(n/12) − 1, so twelve monthly steps give exactly the same yearly growth as the chosen compounding frequency.
  2. Each month the balance grows by i, and your monthly investment is added at the start or end of the month.
  3. Totals. Total invested is the initial amount plus all monthly investments; total interest is the maturity value minus total invested.

For a one-time deposit this is the familiar formula A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n·t).

Worked example

You invest ₹1,00,000 and add ₹10,000 at the end of every month for 10 years at 7.5 % compounded quarterly.

  • You invest ₹1,00,000 + 120 × ₹10,000 = ₹13,00,000.
  • The maturity value is ₹19,84,971.76, so you earn ₹6,84,971.76 in interest.
  • The initial ₹1,00,000 on its own would have grown to ₹2,10,234.93.
  • 7.5 % compounded quarterly is an effective annual rate of about 7.71 %.

Frequently asked questions

What is compound interest?

Compound interest is interest calculated on your principal and on the interest already added to it. Because interest earns interest, the amount grows faster than with simple interest, especially over long periods.

Why is quarterly compounding the default?

Many bank fixed deposits in India compound interest quarterly, so it is a useful starting point. You can switch to monthly, half-yearly, yearly or daily compounding to match your product.

What is the effective annual rate?

It is the yearly return after compounding. A 7.5 % rate compounded quarterly is an effective annual rate of about 7.71 %. Use it to compare products that compound at different frequencies.

Is tax included in the result?

No. Results are before tax and inflation. Interest from deposits is generally taxable at your income-tax slab rate, and banks may deduct TDS.

Is this the same as a SIP calculator?

Not exactly. A SIP in a mutual fund has no fixed rate; returns go up and down with the market. This calculator assumes a fixed interest rate, which suits deposits and recurring deposits. A dedicated SIP calculator is planned.

How long will it take to double my money?

A quick estimate is the rule of 72; divide 72 by the annual rate. At 7.5 %, money doubles in a little under 10 years. Set the monthly investment to zero to see the exact figure.
